The Alafia Banks Richard P. Paul Bird Sanctuary is owned by Mosaic and leased to the Audubon Society as a bird sanctuary for $1.00 per year. Each year, nearly 8,000 to 18,000 pairs of birds nest there. With an average of 16 to 20 species - that makes is one of Florida's largest bird colonies and one of the most diverse in the continental United States. Large numbers of migrating and wintering birds rest and feed on the Alafia Bank shores and sandbars. At Bird Island alone, there have been up to 5,500 pairs of White Ibis and 145 pairs of Roseate Spoonbills! The Sanctuary is posted with "No Trespassing" signs to protect nesting, resting, and foraging birds from disturbance. For additional information on the Alafia Banks Richard P.
